Opportunities are available at HorseTalk for volunteers aged sixteen and up to participate in all aspects of our program, depending on the level of horse experience demonstrated. For students, we will work with your school or college to assist you in recognizing extra credits for participating in the Hippotherapy program.

OPPORTUNITIES:

Leading - At the direction of the therapist, the Leader is responsible for controlling the horse's movements around the ring and on the sensory trail while the patients are riding. Horse experience is required.

Sidewalking - Walking beside the horse while the patient is riding around the ring and on the sensory trail to provide safety, overall support and to participate in activities as directed by the therapist.

Tack Maintenance - Cleaning, oiling, waxing, inspecting tack and equipment used on the horse. Also maintaining a neat tack room, folding and organizing blankets, pads, cleaning and inspecting helmets, happy belts, leads, etc., and making sure the portable supply container is stocked with the needed, brushes, picks, lotions, etc.

Therapy Prop Care - Inspecting, cleaning and maintaining toys and other therapy props used in the arena.

Special Projects - Assisting with horse shows, exhibitions, educational programs, public awareness seminars, capital projects at the stables, etc.

Fundraising - Bringing HorseTalk to the Community, raising funds for scholarships, equipment and horse care.

Internships - Participate to enhance their program of study, i.e. Speech-Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists.

Volunteer Workshops - Will be scheduled to prepare the volunteer and expose them to all aspects of equine assisted programs.
